Plus(a benefit) Minus(a downside) Interesting (an interesting point)

As a Humanities teacher I want students to be able to look at both sides of an argument. The ability to analyse or evaluate an idea or topic is of course an invaluable thinking skill for all students and can be used in any subject.

The PMI template is a simple formula for students to remember and helps to steer students away from an initial emotive response to an issue and consider other sides. They can also only give their opinion on the issue once they have analysed it, rather than before. Students note down the plus points of the issue as they see it, followed by the downside and then any interesting points.

Students PMI’s can be then compared and explored for further discussion.
